Whitewash Loop and South Sandia Peak

The Whitewash, located in the foothills of the beautiful Sandia Mountains, is a great place to go to enjoy the beauty of the outdoors and get active.  With just a short walk on the Piedra Lisa Canyon Trail will take you to the base of the beautiful Whitewash. Here, you can be as adventurous as you like. Test your climbing skills and scale the beautiful rock face , test your hiking endurance along the full 4.2 mile loop, just have a relaxing picnic at the base, it's up to you. You can even bring your K-9 companion as long as they are on a leash. Make sure you pack plenty of water and snacks to enjoy while taking in this beautiful view of ABQ!

Parking is available at the Sandia Foothills Open Space, specifically at the Menaul, Embudo, and Copper trailheads. Larger vehicles or trailers are recommended to park at the Copper Trailhead. However, this trailhead does not have water or restroom facilities. During cooler weather, the loop through this area can become busy with hikers and trail runners as mountain biking is not allowed in the majority of the wilderness area. Hikers should be prepared with enough water for this challenging trail. The journey begins at the Menaul Trailhead and offers two options, Trail 401 or 365, leading to the Whitewash Trail. This steep and unmarked four-mile trail gains 2,500 feet in elevation quickly. An unmarked connector trail is available for those who find the trail too difficult. After the first two miles, the trail levels out and becomes more defined, leading to Oso Pass where Embudito Trail and Three Gun Spring Trail intersect. Hikers can choose to return or continue towards the summit of South Sandia Peak, offering panoramic views and camping spots. Return to Oso Pass and take Three Gun Spring Trail towards Embudo Trail. This trail has unique rock formations, boulder fields, and steep climbs, with photo opportunities and a horse bypass available. Finally, take Embudo Trail back to the trailhead, with options to use side trails such as Trail 401.
